Writing as an artist, activist, and social critic, Baldwin probes the complex condition of being black in America. With a keen eye, he examines everything from the significance of the protest novel to the motives and circumstances of the many black expatriates of the time, from his home in “The Harlem Ghetto” to a sobering “Journey to Atlanta.”

Notes of a Native Son inaugurated Baldwin as one of the leading interpreters of the dramatic social changes erupting in the United States in the twentieth century, and many of his observations have proven almost prophetic. His criticism on topics such as the paternalism of white progressives or on his own friend Richard Wright’s work is pointed and unabashed. He was also one of the few writing on race at the time who addressed the issue with a powerful mixture of outrage at the gross physical and political violence against black citizens and measured understanding of their oppressors, which helped awaken a white audience to the injustices under their noses. Naturally, this combination of brazen criticism and unconventional empathy for white readers won Baldwin as much condemnation as praise.

Notes is the book that established Baldwin’s voice as a social critic, and it remains one of his most admired works. The essays collected here create a cohesive sketch of black America and reveal an intimate portrait of Baldwin’s own search for identity as an artist, as a black man, and as an American.

Notes of a Native Son

By James Baldwin (Author), Edward P. Rogers was a Jamaican-American author, journalist, and historian who contributed to the history of Africa and the African diaspora, especially the history of African Americans in the United States. His research spanned the academic fields of history, sociology and anthropology. He challenged prevailing ideas about race, demonstrated the connections between civilizations, and traced African achievements. He was one of the greatest popularizers of African history in the 20th century. The Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1935 inspired grass roots political activism in black America and is the background to this pamphlet. Rogers's text critiques the nature of race under colonialism by illustrating how state boundaries and racial categories are coordinate, strategic operations of colonial power. In many respects it functions as any early statement of anti-colonialism from the black perspective.

Published ‏ : ‎ July 27, 2015

Language ‏ : ‎ English

Paperback ‏ : ‎ 36 pages

understanding-the-african-philosophical-concept-behind-the-diagram-of-the-law-of-opposites-the-black-mans-religion-by-yosef-a-a-ben-jochannan
Understanding the African Philosophical Concept Behind the "Diagram of the Law of Opposites": The Black Man's Religion by Yosef A.A. ben-Jochannan

Published while teaching at the Africana Studies and Research Center at Cornell University, this work showcases Dr. Ben as a mentor, and gives readers a sample of his interactive teaching style. It helped reshape my vision and kick-start a new chapter in my life that was both extremely difficult and incredibly rewarding. I wouldn’t be sharing this “updated” version with you today if it weren’t for the constant study of the original…I’ll spare you all the gory details, but let’s just say that while things seemed to be going really well for me to onlookers, I was VERY unhappy with where I was and where I was headed… In 2008 I enrolled in a personal development coaching program with Bob Proctor (www.BobProctor.com) and the very first book we studied was As a Man Thinketh. To say that I diligently read the book would be a severe understatement – I STUDIED IT! It spoke to me in a way no other book had; I couldn’t get enough of it. I literally carried it everywhere I went – I read it over and over and over again. If I was in line at a café I pulled it out and read it. If I was waiting for an appointment I pulled it out and read it. Hell, I even read it in the bathroom. ;-b I read it at every opportunity I had. I studied the words, thought about them, made notes and reflected on what they meant to me. I swear, every time I read it, I picked up something new or got a better understanding of the message James Allen was sharing.I’ve since recommended As a Man Thinketh to countless personal training clients and even share an excerpt from chapter 3 (Thought and Health) in my Weight Loss Mindset Seminar that I lead at The Transformation Club in Chanhassen, MN.I updated As a Man Thinketh to As a Woman Thinketh because I train so many women. While James Allen meant for the book to be read by everyone, the style of writing in his time was masculine. I never liked the way this “left women out” of the great lessons taught in his book. This book is too important to be put aside by a woman who misinterprets the title or feels put off by the masculine tone. It discribes the rationale and the results of Anglo Saxon's ideas and methods of insuring the master/slave relationship. The infamous Willie Lynch letter gives both African and Caucasian students and teachers some insight, concerning the brutal and inhumane psychology behind the African slave trade. The materialistic viewpoint of Southern plantation owners that slaver was a business and the victims of chattel slavery were merely pawns in an economic game of debauchery, cross-breeding, inter-racial rape and mental conditioning of a negroid race, they considered sub-human. Equally important is the international nature of the European economic, political and cultural climate that influenced the slave trade. Within the time scale of African History, it was a relatively short period, a mere one and a half centuries from the most intensive phase of the Atlantic slave trade to the advent of European administration and dominance. Long before that the Slave Coast had been chartered by the Portuguese and the people off the area west of Benin, between the volta River and Lagos, European traders traced a cultural history which linked them with the earliest Yoruba settlements to the north and eastern borders of Africa.
Product Dimensions: 5.5 x 0.2 x 8.5 inches

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0273/2005/files/the-willie-lynch-letter-and-the-making-of-a-slave-18.jpg?v=1758737266
chicken-soup-for-the-soul-im-speaking-now-black-women-share-their-truth-in-101-stories-of-love-courage-and-hope
Chicken Soup for the Soul: I'm Speaking Now: Black Women Share Their Truth in 101 Stories of Love, Courage and Hope by Amy Newmark, Breena Clarke

Now more than ever, the strong, independent, courageous voices of Black women are being heard loud and clear. Nearly a century later, this singular talent is recognized as one of the most influential and revered American artists of the modern period.

Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick is an outstanding collection of stories about love and migration, gender and class, racism and sexism that proudly reflect African American folk culture. Brought together for the first time in one volume, they include eight of Hurston’s “lost” Harlem stories, which were found in forgotten periodicals and archives. These stories challenge conceptions of Hurston as an author of rural fiction and include gems that flash with her biting, satiric humor, as well as more serious tales reflective of the cultural currents of Hurston’s world. All are timeless classics that enrich our understanding and appreciation of this exceptional writer’s voice and her contributions to America’s literary traditions.
